  • Identity

    Refers to an individual's sense of self, encompassing various aspects such as personal characteristics, values, and affiliations. Identity is shaped by experiences, relationships, and cultural influences.

  • Identity Theft

    Involves the unauthorized acquisition and use of an individual's personal information for fraudulent purposes, often resulting in financial harm. Protection against identity theft includes vigilance in securing personal information, using secure online practices, and promptly addressing any suspicious activity.

  • Ileum

    The last part of the small intestine, the ileum is located after the jejunum and before the large intestine. Its main job is to absorb nutrients like vitamins (especially vitamin B12), minerals, and leftover digested food. It also helps absorb bile salts, which are recycled for digestion.

  • Illicit Drug Use

    The unauthorized or illegal consumption of substances with psychoactive effects. Illicit drug use poses significant health risks, including addiction, mental health issues, and legal consequences.

  • Immune System

    A complex system including various cells, tissues, and organs that protects the body against infections and diseases by recognizing and eliminating harmful pathogens.

  • Immunization Schedules

    Immunization schedules outline the recommended timing and doses of vaccines to protect individuals from preventable diseases.

  • Immunizations

    Also known as vaccinations or vaccines, immunizations involve administering weakened or killed pathogens to stimulate the immune system's response. This process provides protection against specific diseases.

  • Individual

    A single person or organism, distinct from others, with unique characteristics or traits. In a broader sense, individual refers to any separate entity considered individually, whether human, animal, or another organism.

  • Infections

    Occurs when harmful germs enter the body, multiply, and trigger a response from the immune system.

  • Infectious Disease

    Illnesses caused by pathogenic microorganisms, such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, or parasites. These diseases can spread from person to person, through contaminated surfaces, or through vectors.

  • Inflammatory Bowel Disease

    Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) is a group of chronic inflammatory conditions affecting the digestive tract, including Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis.

  • Influenza

    Commonly known as the flu, influenza is a viral respiratory infection that can cause mild to severe illness.

  • Injections

    The administration of medications or vaccines by a healthcare professional using a sterile needle and syringe.

  • Injury Prevention

    Involves measures to reduce the risk of accidents and injuries. Injury prevention promotes safety practices (ex: wearing a seatbelt), using protective equipment (ex: helmets), and raising awareness about potential hazards (ex: poorly lit streets).

  • Insulin Resistance

    Insulin resistance is a condition where cells in the body become less responsive to the effects of insulin, leading to impaired glucose regulation. It is associated with the development of type 2 diabetes and other metabolic issues.

  • Integumentary System

    The body's largest organ system, comprising the skin, hair, nails, and associated structures. It serves as a protective barrier, regulates temperature, and participates in sensory functions.

  • Intercourse

    Refers to sexual activity involving penetration, typically associated with vaginal, anal, or oral intercourse.

  • Intimacy

    Closeness, emotional connection, and shared experiences between individuals. Intimacy comes in many forms including emotional, physical, and sexual intimacy. Healthy intimacy involves open communication, mutual respect, and consent.

    A mechanical ventilator that was once used to assist individuals with respiratory difficulties during polio outbreaks.
