  • Ability

    An individual's capacity to perform a specific action or skill successfully. It can encompass a range of physical, cognitive, and emotional capabilities.

  • Abortion

    A medical procedure or the use of medication to terminate a pregnancy. It can be performed for various reasons, including maternal health or fetal abnormalities.

  • Abstinence

    A decision to refrain from engaging in certain behaviors, often associated with abstaining from sexual activity, and using drugs and alcohol. Abstinence is one of many prevention strategies against unintended pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections.

  • Abuse

    The harmful or unjust treatment of individuals, often involving physical, emotional, or verbal harm.

  • Acids

    Substances that release hydrogen ions when dissolved in water, resulting in a solution with a pH less than 7 and play essential roles in various chemical processes.

  • Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome

    Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS), is the advanced stage of HIV infection. It weakens the immune system, making individuals susceptible to opportunistic infections and certain cancers. There is no cure for AIDS but early diagnosis, medical care, and antiretroviral medications can help manage the condition and improve quality of life.

  • Adverse Childhood Experiences

    Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are traumatic experiences during childhood, such as abuse, neglect, or household dysfunction. Exposure to ACEs can have long-term impacts on physical and mental health.

  • Agriculture

    Cultivating the soil, raising crops, and rearing livestock for sustenance, fiber, medicinal plants, and other products. Agriculture encompasses a variety of farming techniques and practices, contributing significantly to global food production.

  • Allergies

    An immune system response (allergic reaction) to substances that trigger symptoms such as sneezing, itching, or respiratory issues. Common allergens include pollen, pet dander, and certain foods. Extreme allergic reaction can lead to anaphylaxis which is a medical emergency.

  • Amygdala

    an almond-shaped part of the brain in the temporal lobe that processes emotions like fear, anger, and pleasure. The amygdala helps with emotional memory, decision-making, and triggering physical responses, such as the fight-or-flight reaction.

  • Anaphylaxis

    Anaphylaxis is a severe and potentially life-threatening allergic reaction that requires medical attention. It involves widespread immune system activation, leading to symptoms like difficulty breathing, swelling, and a drop in blood pressure.

  • Anecdote

    A brief personal story or account that illustrates a point or provides insight. Anecdotes do not necessarily represent broader trends.

  • Anemia

    A medical condition characterized by a deficiency of red blood cells or hemoglobin, leading to reduced oxygen-carrying capacity in the blood.

  • Animal Safety

    Practices and measures to ensure the well-being and protection of animals and the safety of humans when they interact with animals. This encompasses responsible pet ownership, humane treatment of animals in various settings, and strategies to prevent accidents or injuries involving animals.

  • Anthrax

    Anthrax is a serious disease caused by the bacteria Bacillus anthracis, typically affecting livestock and wild animals. Humans can become infected through contact with infected animals, contaminated products, or spores inhaled or introduced through cuts.

  • Antibiotics

    Medications that combat bacterial infections either by eliminating bacteria or impeding their growth. These medications treat a variety of bacterial illnesses, ranging from common infections to more severe conditions.

  • Antibiotic Resistance

    The ability of bacteria and other microorganisms to withstand the effects of antibiotics that once effectively killed them or inhibited their growth. Antibiotic resistance often results from genetic mutations or resistant genes.

  • Antibiotic Stewardship

    A systematic approach to using antibiotics in healthcare settings to improve patient outcomes, reduce the spread of antibiotic resistance, and ensure the effective management of infectious diseases through appropriate prescribing practices.

  • Anus

    The external opening at the end of the digestive tract that serves as the exit point for waste material that has undergone digestion and absorption in the gastrointestinal system.

  • Anxiety

    A natural response to stress or perceived threats. It involves feelings of unease, worry, and fear. Excessive or persistent anxiety can become a treatable mental health disorder.

  • Arboviruses

    Arboviruses are viruses transmitted to humans through arthropods such as mosquitoes and ticks. They can cause diseases like West Nile virus and Zika virus. Prevention involves measures to avoid insect bites and control vector populations.

  • Arteries

    Arteries are blood vessels that carry oxygenated blood away from the heart to various parts of the body.

  • Asbestos

    A mineral fiber that was once used in various construction materials for its fire-resistant properties. Prolonged exposure to asbestos can lead to serious health issues, including lung diseases and cancer. Asbestos use is regulated due to its associated health risks.

  • Asexuality

    A sexual orientation characterized by a lack of sexual attraction toward individuals of any gender.

  • Assault

    Assault is the intentional act of causing someone to fear immediate harm, often through threats or gestures. In criminal law, it doesn't require physical contact but centers on the victim's sense of threat.

  • Asthma

    A chronic respiratory condition characterized by inflammation and narrowing of the airways, leading to breathing difficulties.

  • Autism

    A neurodevelopmental condition characterized by variations in social interaction, communication, and repetitive behaviors. It falls within a spectrum, indicating a diverse range of strengths and challenges among individuals.

  • Avalanches

    Occurs when a rapid flow of snow travels down a slope triggered by factors like snowpack instability or human activity.
